Paperport 14 does not work in Windows 10 (39 Comments)

Topic by William Maslen

In earlier released versions Paperport worked.

But In the RTM version ( 240 ) Paperport 14 freezes and has to be killed via Task Manager.

Yes I tried Compatability Mode right off the bat.

No help.

Has anyone got it to work in Windows 10 version 240?

Biggest problem is that there is no newer version so I can't upgrade or anything.

Anyone know of another document management program similar to Paperport?

Hi there,

I have a Brother DCP195C multifunction printer and scanner that I need to use the OCR function on for the first time.

The CD it came with only had paperport for Windows 2000.

I have spoken to Brother who directed me here. Could you please tell me where I can download a version of paperport that will work on windows 10 64 bit ?

Thanks in advance.

unwanted resizing of page within multi-page .tiff's

Dear PaperPort users,

I've updated to the latest 14.5 version from the old 11.1 demo version that came with our Ricoh copier.  It overall is a great improvement except that it will resize pages without warning.  Below is my process:

  • Multipage .tiff files (B&W, OCR) are sent from a Ricoh copier directly to a folder in my C: drive, which are then accessed with PaperPort.
  • In ImageView, when I zoom in, the image on the screen will sometimes become very small before zooming in.  When this happens, PaperPort has resized my image.  See attached screenshot of a 10x13 inch file which is now inexplicably 84x108 inches.
  • If I do any work on the page before saving, this one specific page of the file will be resized.
  • It is impossible to “resize” the now jumbo page to its correct dimensions as the page is corrupt.
  • If I escape out of ImageView without saving, the page is not resized.
  • This occurs about 10% of the time.

I have contacted Support.   Their recommendation of re-installing the software (with ant-virus software turned off) didn’t solve the problem.  They currently say the problem is with my files and I should “scan from PaperPort”.  I’ve never had an issue with my files before and I’m not sure how a $69 piece of software is going to tell a $20,000 copier how to do its job better.

So, has anyone else had this issue?  My colleagues in the Dallas and Chicago Symphonies all tell me they’re experiencing the same problem of resizing.  This is beginning to sound like a programming bug that Nuance needs to address.

Any advice is appreciated before I contact Support again,

Doug

OP Ult (19), with PP 14, Windows 8.1.  OP install appears OK.  Initial PP install produced "PaperPort has stopped working" error msg.   Tried several remedies, none worked, so finally Uninstalled PP, rebooted, and Reinstalled.

Upon attempting to start PP, now getting Error Msg "PaperPort appears to be running Windows XP Compatibility... see Technote 6629"

Alas, PP is NOT running in Win XP mode - although did try manually setting it to XP Mode (& then Win 7 mode), in hopes that Setting Compatibility and then Reversing it would "Fix" the issue.

It has not.

Along the way, have tried "Repair", Run as Admin, Changing DEP settings, running the Win 8 Compatibility Test.

FWIW, systems says it is running PaperPort File Version 14.5.13205.1029, as Product Version 14.5.

OH: Also read something along lines that "certain security settings may automatically impose Windows XP Compatibility," but with no mention as to WHICH Security settings, OR what to do about it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks -

Hi,  I've been using PP 14.5 on Win 10 since Dec 2015 without serious issue. Win 10 just did an update and now, upon launching PP, I get a message window on top of the PP desktop indicating I'm running in XP Compatibility Mode.  When I dismiss the message PP quits so the program is now completely unusable.  I was able to verify that I'm not running PP in XP compatibility mode.

I tried rebooting - no change.  Can anyone help?

Thanks, Bob

PaperPort 12 Scanner Issue (2 Comments)

I have PaperPort 12 Professional and am using an Epson Stylus BX305FW MFD. Both the scanner and PP work perfectly, but recently PP decided it no longer wanted to work with the scanner. When I attempt to scan PP pops up a dialog box entitled 'Available Scanners' - the list is empty.

If I run the external Scanner Setup Wizard it instantly recognised the 'Twain: EPSON BX305' device. Proceeding thru the dialogs I receive a final dialog stating that the scanner has been associated with PP. But when I open PP again it still insists it doesn't have a scanner.

The 'Epson Scan' utility (which PP always used to pop up when I tried to scan anything) can be run independently to PP to create PDF files which I can then drag into PP. But there is no way to get that utility to launch from within PP.

I have fully re-installed PP and also the Epson scanner software, but it hasn't changed anything.

I try running the INITWAIN.EXE utility, it refuses to install TWAIN.EXE.

I have also given my PC the pleasure of running a full registry check. As expected it found a number of problems which it fixed, but it hasn't changed anything with respect to getting the scanner recognised by PP.

Something has obviously changed on my PC recently which has caused this association between PP and the scanner to be broken. But I don't know what.

Can someone please suggest what I might look for? I'm a techy so having to look in the registry to confirm something doesn't frighten me.

Thanks,

Andrew

I have owned PaperPort 14 Professional since 2012, while it was top of the line in 2012 it is becoming outdated with little in the way of updates.

Has Nuance decided to just let PP die a slow death or is there something new in the works.

If it is just going to die, what other products is everyone switching to?

Thanks.

Just did a clean install of Windows 10.

Installed Paperport Pro 12.1 and everything seems OK except it can't find my Canon Pixma MX512 multi-function printer/scanner. Finds the printer but not the scanner. The scanner is a one page at a time with ADF and all are working OK in Adobe Acrobat.

Tried both TWAIN and WIA.

The same setup was working fine in Windows 7 Pro two days ago.

I tried the Scanner Setup Wizard utility and the setup in PP all to no avail.

Please help - don't want to buy PP 14 just yet.

One solution to Paperport hang/freeze (29 Comments)

I’ve been using Paperport since 1998 when I bought a Visioneer scanner and got a free copy.  Over the years I’ve upgraded to almost every new version.

I love it when it works correctly and hate it when it doesn’t!  I’m also not fond of Nuance.  I believe they make world class software but their customer relation skills are lacking, to put it mildly.

I use Paperport every day, only home use, but all my bills, documents, stock trades, receipts, manuals etc go into Paperport.

I recently upgraded to Paperport 14 and when I found PDF Converter 8 on sale I decided to try that as well.

The computer I’m using is one I built a few months ago using a Gigabyte motherboard, Intel I5 2500K cpu and 16GB, 4x4GB, of G.Skill ram.  Paperport 12 had run on it fine and 14 had run fine until I installed PDF Converter 8.  That’s when I started getting hangs and freezes.

I spent a LOT of time with Google, trying different suggested fixes and it would work….for a while, from a couple of days to a couple of hours.  Then, last week it became unusable.  Paperport and PDF Converter would freeze.  I’d force it closed, reboot the computer reopen it and it would immediately freeze.

Through Google searches I’d found the Nuance utility Checkppfolders.  Using that I had cleared the metadata and run the search for hung files a number of times.  I found a few and removed or repaired them.  But the last time the search revealed NO hung files but Paperport would NOT stop freezing!

I now realized I was going to HAVE to call Nuance for help.  I was convinced this was a software problem but wanted to make SURE the problem was not on my end.  I thought that if it was a hardware problem it was most likely either memory or power supply.  So I downloaded Memtest86+ and ran it for 5 hours, 3 full passes, without errors.  But, I noticed my timings were wrong!  This memory was supposed to run at 9-9-9-24 and it was running at 11-11-11-28!  WTH?  As I was considering my options I remembered reading reviews of this ram before I bought it.  One guy complained about it not running at advertised timings.  A G.Skill rep replied and asked him to enable XMP.

I had thought, like everyone else that the SPD codes had the pertinent ram info but decided it was worth a try so I booted into bios and found XMP disabled, so I enabled it, rebooted and rechecked my timings, 9-9-9-24!  On all 4 sticks! And rock solid.  In my case the memory controller must have the info from the Extended Memory Profile in order to correctly set the ram timings.

In the last couple of days I have actually tried to make Paperport 14 or PDF Converter 8 hang.  They will NOT hang.  Rock solid for two days!

I’m not fond of Nuance, but this time it’s on me and I take back all the bad things I’ve said about you over the last week!

I’m hoping this information is of some use to Nuance and  helps someone else with a similar problem. Check that ram!  Apparently Paperport is very susceptible to ram issues as I saw no other manifestations of the problem in other software.

Let me just say also, the Checkppfolders utility is extremely useful but it could be great!  I’d love to be able to choose a group of folders, one single folder or even one or a few files.  You know, just like I can scan one or more files with my antivirus!  And please, make it easier to find!  Put it on the toolbar!

I would also like to recommend that you put a link to these forums in the help menu of the toolbar!  The forum is new and not easy to find even if you know it exists!  Well run and attended forums can actually be more helpful than tech support!

Problems with Image View in Paperport 14 (Win 7) (7 Comments)

I haven't seen anyone else mentioning this specific problem, but it started yesterday (Mar 17).

I am using Windows 7 x64.

I can scan to a PDF and view the document as a PDF, but I can no longer print to Paperport (from a webpage or from MS Word) and I can no longer open the document in Image View mode to edit it.  The thumbnail on the Desktop view does not show a preview of the document, it just shows a broken PDF icon.

Any help would be appreciated.  I have restarted my computer multiple times, I have uninstalled and re-installed with the same issues, and two separate anti-virus programs have found no malware.

Win 10 Paperport 12 can not print to paperport

Have been running Paperport 12 on my win 10 desktop for a year or so.  Recently I added a second Win 10 HP tower.  I installed Paperport 12 on this second PC and copied a number of files from the older PC.  Everything seems to work fine, EXCEPT I have found there is no "print to paperport" option when I try to put a copy of a document in my paperport on the new PC.

Did some searching on internet and found several references to ptdntins.exe indicating need to open file and run (in my case) the 64 bit version of this file  ---  However, I cannot find the above referenced file on the new PC.

Any help appreiated!

I have a dell optiplex windows 7 professional computer.  I purchased and installed paperport 14 more than a year ago.  I have the weirdest thing happening with my computer.  When I right mouse click on an icon, it brings up the install nuance pdf create 7 installer and then errors, when cancelled it then brings up the properties menu for the icon.

Maybe someone can assist me in getting rid of this problem.  I don't know how to change the default right-mouse click procedure for windows 7.  Thanks in advance!

SET tools do not recognize pdf that was created in PP

I have been using PP for years. Suddenly the SET tools do not recognize pdfs that were created in PP (they are scanned copies of receipts). The popup says the file must be converted to an image file, but when I select that option, the image created is badly degraded and unreadable. PP did the conversion without creating a preview, and now I have totally unreadable images and I can't go back. I have never had a problem using the SET tools with these images in the past. What the heck is going on?

Slow PP 14 Professional

My pp 14.5 professional is generally slow, probably due to its size (2.95 GB, 6,200+ files, 360 Folders), stacking/unstacking is slow, sometimes I have to exit program and re open it (clear memory) to avoid losing active thumbnail permanently. Would adding a Video card do any good to performance and general function....its all about graphics so I'm thinking a Video card would help....currently I'm probably taxing my intel i5 chip., with 8GB Ram.
